The Bestlite Collection, 1930 Bestlite has been in continuous production since 1930. Robert Dudley Best (1892 – 1984) was fascinated by the Bauhaus movement’s lean design and revolutionary demands for a new era free from superfluous decoration.

It was in this spirit that he designed the Bestlite lamps. Its unique aesthetic and functionality have made it a contemporary design icon.

Designed by Robert Dudley Best Table lamps, floor lamps, wall lamps and pendants The Bestlite collection includes table lamps, floor lamps, wall lamps and pendants in several sizes. The materials are chrome-plated steel stems and fittings, and powder-coated aluminium shades. On the table lamps and floor lamps the base is made of powder-coated aluminium with an integrated steel counterweight.

All wires are textile covered with colour matching the shade and base. The Bestlite collection is also available in brass where all steel parts have been substituted with solid brass material. To obtain a maintenance-free brass surface, a surface layer of clear lacquer has been applied. A small key is included to tighten the joint of the lamp arm if needed

  • Robert Dudley Best

Robert Dudley Best (1892-1984) was heir to the world's largest lighting factory, founded in Birmingham in 1840. Despite its proud history, Best felt that the lamp designs produced by the factory were outdated. In 1925, Best visited the International Exhibition of Modern Design in Paris, where many of the designs exhibited were influenced by the work of Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe. Inspired by what he had seen, Best began his studies of industrial design in Paris and Düsseldorf, where he became close friends with Walter Gropius, the founder of the Bauhaus movement. It was during this time that he made the first sketches of what would become the iconic Bestlite design.
